Cinnamon
Cinnamon has been highly valued for a very long time. Not only was it found in tombs of Ancient Egypt, but there are also stories of mythology involving cinnamon. One legend tells the story of a giant bird, the Cinnamologus, who collected cinnamon bark to build its nest. When the people living nearby wanted cinnamon sticks, they devised plans to steal part of the bird’s nest. One method was to throw rocks towards the high-perched nests in hopes of knocking loose a few pieces. Another method was to slaughter a large animal such as an ox. Heavy chunks of the animal were placed at the base of the nest. The large bird would then fly down, pick up the meat, then fly it back to its nest to feast. The people hoped the weight of the combined bird and sacrifice would weigh down the nest enough to collapse it, raining cinnamon sticks on all.
