Sage
Also known as culinary sage, sage was thought to bring immortality and was one of the most highly valued herbs in the 10th century. In fact, part of the Latin name comes from the word “salvus” which means “to save”. Sage was a symbol of fertility, good health, and a long life, and it was planted in nearly all gardens. Before refrigeration, sage was commonly used as a meat preserver as well as a way to mask rancid meat.
Sage is considered a liver tonic, and can help with a variety of PMS issues, but has a particular affinity for addressing night sweats. Sage is quite drying and has been traditionally used to help dry out milk supplies at the end of lactation in humans and animals.
